Backcountry Eating
After a morning in the backcountry, you'll want to head to Backcountry Provisions (635 Lincoln Aveune, 970-879-3617), on the second floor of Old Town Square, to refuel. The extensive sandwich menu includes favorites like the Avalanche (roast beef and Asiago cheese) and the Pilgrim (turkey and cranberry chutney), both $6.95.

This summer we were in Steamboat Springs and I had the best sandwich I have ever had. It was from Backcountry Provisions and it was called the Pilgrim. It had sliced roasted turkey, seasoned stuffing, sweet cranberry chutney, muenster cheese and lettuce. I would love the recipe for the stuffing and cranberry chutney, so I can have them with my Thanksgiving dinner and then make fabulous leftover sandwiches.

Tips for those who travel on their stomachs
The perfect sandwich may be located just behind the deli case at this great little soup-and-sandwich spot, handily located upstairs from The Steaming Bean (Old Mocha Molly's location). Choosing just one of the excellent sandwich creations posted on the wall would be difficult enough without the distraction of the framed backcountry skiing photos on the walls -- the other passion of the two owners. Stop by first thing in the morning to pick up a rough-travel-ready lunch and the chuckle while you wait, imagining the envy or your fellow venturers when you whip out your perfectly civilized sandy in some very uncivilized locale. |
